Therapeutic Activities

According to The Eden Alternative Philosophy of care, there are three plagues that affect the elderly in care homes: Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom. At All About Dementia we agree, and the therapeutic benefit of having a strong Activity Lead is vital in combating those three issues.

This training day is structured around the antidotes to these issues, looking at structuring an Activity Department that is equal in importance to the care tasks not subordinate to them. We look at how Activity staff and Care Staff can tag team each other for better delivery of care. We stress that carers should not be tasked with activities but that recreational experienced trained staff should be in that role. No longer is bingo, painting nails, music or crafts good enough. It takes far more than that. In care facilities that realise this, the medication usage drops, residents fall rate declines, as does resident death rate. Families report high approval ratings of the facility and good word of mouth results in waiting lists for placements. This course is an investment for care homes to modernise and improve care.
