Increased life span of people with learning disabilities has led to an increased risk of developing a dementia. This course looks at the links between Down’s Syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other learning disabilities and various dementias. Recognition of a developing dementia in a person with learning disabilities is explored, and interventions to support the person are highlighted. The unique challenges for carers are discussed and different scenarios highlighted.

Motivation towards Person Centred Care
This course examines the delegate’s concepts of care, both as a staff member and as a family member, focusing on the differences. We allow delegates to contemplate the realities of being a service user, gaining empathy in the process. Delegates will hear where “Personhood” and “Person Centred Care” originated, the history of the idea and the future importance of the concept. Moving on to motivation, the course covers responsibility of utilizing self motivation as key to practising PCC. Various methods of self motivation are explored and tested. The importance of service to others is highlighted and we delineate between material reward and emotional. We discuss team motivation, role of different personalities in the team and team building skills. Finally we form a plan of action to be put into effect immediately on return to the work place.

This full day course has been designed to educate domiciliary carers in the fundamental skills required in caring for a person in their own home. The course would be an excellent induction course and also a refresher for carers that may not fully understand the dementia signs and symptoms in their clients.
Delegates will have time to ask questions and discuss their personal experiences, in a confidential environment, that encourages peer support and uses coaching techniques. Caring for a person in their home is vastly different than caring in a care home, and time is spent discussing the unique difficulties domiciliary carers run into every day. Interventions and solutions are given.

The focus of this course is on the unique issues found in identifying abuse in a dementia care setting. We discuss the different types of abuse and neglect, then highlight the interventions that must be utilised in dementia care settings. Due to diminished cognitive function and loss of communication skills the elders with dementia may be extremely vulnerable to abuse, and the signs and symptoms overlooked. In a mixed population of cognitive and dementia elders, it is common to find bullying and emotional abuse between residents accepted and tolerated. This course points out the duty of care in protecting the most vulnerable as our top priority.

With ever increasing impetus on autonomy and choice in dementia care policy, Advance Care Planning (ACP) is promoted by the NHS End of Life Care Programme. If an individual’s wishes and preferences are recorded in advance, then staff can support people as they would want at all times, even if they are unable to express their wishes or manage the processes for themselves and their dignity can be maintained. This course outlines the need for ACP to be undertaken as soon as possible for all care home residents, and details the path for staff to follow in asking the right questions.
